Question & Answers

Michael, master NLP practitioner and Nominated British Hairdresser of the Year has answered some of the many questions he has been asked as the Hair Doctor of your most common hair & scalp problems.

Q. I like my hair dead straight. Straightening irons are a wonderful invention and as I wash my hair everyday, I use them every day: but although my hair is straight, my hair feels extremely dry and brittle. How would it be possible achieve straight soft and glossy look?
Susan Cross, Burnham on Crouch

A. I`m pleased to hear you wash your hair every day; do make sure you massage your scalp well as this is where a build up can occur. Use a good cleanser followed by a moisturising conditioner for the middle and ends. You can get a Smoother cream if you blow dry your first, then before you use the irons use a spray that will protect your hair from the heat of the iron.

Q. Please help me! I have exceedingly fine, lank hair and I am sure it`s getting thinner. Is there anything I can do?
Maggie Soames, Ongar

A. The problem with fine hair is that most products are too heavy and lack the protein that fine hair needs. I would suggest do wash your hair once a day massaging the scalp using the finger tips very well, this would stimulate hair growth. There are some professional products that are excellent for fine hair and I would suggest you check with your stylist or contact me direct.

Q. My hair never looks healthy and shiny! I wear it in a bob and like to wash it every day. I should add that it is coloured.
Carol Jenkins, Halstead

A. You can boil an egg in six minutes with a hand dry, which just goes to show how important it is to protect your hair from the heat. I would suggest you wash your hair with a quality shampoo for coloured hair and use a light blow dry lotion to spray on before you dry.

Q. My boyfriend suffers from terrible dandruff of which he finds most uncomfortable and embarrassing. He has tried using all the shampoos that you buy from the supermarket/chemist - can you recommend anything else please?
Sally Deaken, Basildon

A. There are different forms of dandruff and it may be that your boyfriend is suffering from eczema or psoriasis or not washing the shampoo out properly. Either way he must thoroughly and firmly massage his scalp when shampooing and to rinse with cool water very well. Over the years I have found dry and irritant scalps both very common and caused by stress. Because of this I have formulated my own shampoo and treatment cream derived from essential oils. Depending on the condition the shampoo will soothe and stop the irritation and could bring relief after a six week course.
